The most important is the general rule: 
verb + er  suffix : the agent, 
(person , he OR she, or a thing.)
This is the standard pattern: maybe 20 thousand verbs! 
The agent MAY be
 a person- a man or a woman- 
 or a thing. 
In
 each case,in the singular, we  use the correspomding pronouns for the person or 
thing : 
He, him, his, etc, 
She , her, hers etc, 
It , it, its, etc

A tennis -player (person, he or she) plays tennis. Nadal is a tennis player. He has won wimbledon.

A very very very very few agents, when human, have  a special female form, usually -essA waiter is a man. , (or thing: a dumbwaiter is a trolly for food, used in hotels etc) a waitress is a human female.
