the menu

turkey, mashed potato, pumpkin pie

The origins

Thanksgiving America, Puritans,UK and USA, and Pilgrim fathers

 The " Pilgrim Fathers",1621, were(=eran) English Puritans"

The first English colony in America, Jamestown, Virginia : not Puritan!

But
Americans  consider  Puritans
their ancestors .
(The English Puritan colonists arrived (=llegaron) in 1620 ,later than the Jamestown , Virginia , colony.
125 years  later  than Columbus! .
 In the  North,
In  Massachusetts, New England  USA) .

The first Thanksgiving:
The Autumn of their first harvest in the new world .
They celebrated with the local Indians

From this 1621

 to this Nowadays :

They call those PURITAN colonists
 the PILGRIM FATHERS!(=padres peregrinos)

But
  why? .
Let's Consider:

http://endtimepilgrim.org/puritans10.htmhttp://endtimepilgrim.org/puritans10.htm
Who and where  are these people?

In fact ,this is USA today ,
and these are a type  of   CATHOLICS:
 "plain Catholics"(press for link)

Just look at this plain catholic kitchen ,(press for link)

Today's USA has
small  religious  groups
who ,
deliberately,
live   like their ancestors ,
on farms  in the country,
  with
No phones, No TV, no radios, no cars, ...

Homemade (= hecho a mano) clothes,homemade

 houses, homemade furniture.....

  (and many home-made children, too!)

People don't know about the   plain Catholics

The(protestant) Hutterites are better known

AND, Very famous:
The(different protestant) AMISH:
 (Included in several films)

Amish classroom

............All these groups  still(=todavia, aun) LIVE
in the ASCETIC way of the Puritan "Pilgrim Fathers"
independant
hard-working
self-reliant

But they-
plain Catholics, Hutterites, and Amish - are all
pacific, !

  early 17th century :

The English Puritans
and this includes the American "Pilgrim Fathers"
were(=eran) ascetics , etc
but they were NOT pacifists.

So , who were the Puritans ?

Complicated English:(letra pequeña solo para alumnos "super")
In the 16th century, in England ,

1530s: King  Henry VIII started English protestantism

  • Divorced his wife, Catherine of Aragon
  • Broke with Rome
  • Imposed his own, invented, church on the English and on the Welsh (and soon , on the Irish) by armed force
  • Shut down ALL the monasteries and took all their land and buildings, in the cities and in the countryside
  • Closed and shut down all the little and not-so-little chapels that were not Parish churches  on very valuable sites in the cities, and got a lot of money
  • Killed about 100,000 people, mostly Catholics, who opposed any or all of this  this.(The most famous are St Thomas More, his chancellor, and St John Fisher, a bishop of part of London , and his mother's confessor.)
  • Prohibited numerous feasts, but not all.
  • Link to my post on Halloween  for some more details

But one group of protestants especially
were
 NOT satisfied
with the Protestantism of the King's  "CHURCH OF ENGLAND":
the Puritans.
They wanted to "purify" the church of England and the Christian religion.
AND manage everything!

A small group of Puritans
obtained the King's permission to start a colony in America.
These were the "Pilgrim fathers", the "MAYFLOWER" colonists.
1620

(NB Los Españoles ya cruzaban el Pacifico)

Many tens of thousands
tens of thousands
tens of thousands
tens of thousands
tens of thousands
 .............of other English Puritans

followed
followed
followed
followed
followed (=seguian)
                       them
                       across the Atlantic
.................................to New England .

Usually: All the family : grandparents to grandchildren!
Dates of Puritan colonies in New England:

In America from 1620.......
The Pilgrims First Washing Day at Provincetown MA Vintage Postcard

Nowadays Puritans do not exist in the UK or USA

Recapitulating: About  1621:
 The pilgrim fathers, then ,
and the first thanksgiving in Plymouth,Massachussetts ,  New England, America

With the local Indians,
after the first harvest,
eating local, not European foods  :
The Pilgrim fathers, Puritans from England , with  the Indians at the beginning

But

una generacion despues
despues de la muerte del cacique Indio amigo:

Left :Christmas was prohibited,

from very small beginnings
Puritan "New England "  in America grew(=crecia) and grew and grew and grew and grew
and prospered

Like ALL the English colonies in America .

*******************************************
*********************************

Puritan "New England "  in America grew
and prospered

But
In England
Back across the Atlantic

 in England

from 1642 : a Civil War.

 Monarchists and Parliamentarians

Puritans : first  only a part of the Parliamentary side ,
 but
Puritans : THE WINNERS!
Boss Puritan: General Cromwell

Puritans took over
  • the parliamentary army in the civil war,
  • then the government,
  • and everything in the state
  • all religion included
  • under their leader, the military dictator OLIVER Cromwell
AND
  • Prohibited the celebration of Christmas
  • prohibited .... theatre, fun, you name it, you couldn't do it.
  • Committed genoicide in Ireland
  • and a long etc.

Many American puritans crossed the Atlantic to Britain

to help Cromwell fight the war and  govern Britain...

Cromwell,Puritan, brilliant General. Winner of the civil War, then Dictator.

Cromwell's puritan army comitting genoicide against Irish catholics.

Puritan Government in England was military and totalitarian
Using children against their parents.Stalin copied this, then  Hitler..

A puritan government  militia  house search

When Oliver Cromwell died, Puritans were so discredited in Great Britain that they left or changed

But NOT so in AMERICA
Very many American PROTESTANTS follow Cromwell's religious laws to this day (the "westminster statutes)

American puritans disappeared , and became presbyterians, baptists , congregationalists, and even unitarians ( Like Obama's grandparents and their ancestors.)
and thousands of other things!

When Cromwell died(=murio)  English puritans "evaporated"
